Cleveland housing court has put a moratorium on all evictions until June 15, 2020 as a result of Corona Virus.
One of the first steps Judge Mona Scott undertook after becoming housing court judge in Cleveland in January 2020, was to fire (or retire) about a dozen housing court employees. She fired Jeffrey Johnson to be the court’s Chief Housing Specialist. While on city council, Johnson was active in efforts to push the city of Cleveland to impose new lead safe requirements on landlords whose properties have lead-based paint.
The moratorium on all evictions is a new direction for the city of Cleveland. The court does not seem to understand that if landlords cannot collect rents, and cannot use the courts to enforce their leases; the best landlords will be motivated to leave Cleveland and invest in more reasonable communities.
